You know when you were a kid and you’d hear “the reason I’m upset isn’t because of what you did, it’s because you’re not living up to your potential!”? Well, this is how I feel about Nicolas Cage. He has the ability to be REALLY good in a film, and yet, so often he’s just screaming “no! Not the BEEEES!!”
In Wild At Heart (a fine little David Lynch gem and the reason I had cats named Sailor and Lula,) he’s both completely ridiculous and fully believable every moment. This scene (which I tragically cannot embed, natch) is a perfect example. Also, in Moonstruck, he’s AMAZING. Here is is doing a dead on impersonation of my ex boyfriend. And yet, for the vast majority of the time, he’s just terrible. TERRIBLE. Why does he do this? I don’t know. Furthermore, I’ve taken so long writing this post and I’ve had so many interruptions at this point that I’ve ceased to care. So, as a final note, watch this. It’s Nicolas Cage losing his shit, in good times and bad. Enjoy.
